The Legend of Shankhadhar private viewing

Preetie Kachipati, London, On Monday 31st October 2016, Pasa Puchah Guthi UK (PPGUK), London organised the private film screening of Nepal’s first animated movie ‘The Legend of Shankhadhar’ at Greenford Town Hall, London, UK.
Mr. Ojesh Singh gave a welcome speech, in which he wished everyone Nhu Dhaya Bhintuna and greeted all guests; among the audience included PPG UK Reading President, Mr. Sudarshan Shrestha and PPG South East London UK President Mr. Sushil Prajapati. Members from both branches also attended the event. Mr. Singh then invited PPGUK founding members Mr. Balmukund Prasad Joshi, Mr. Mahanta Bahadur Shrestha, Mr. Arjun Pradhan and Mr. Shashidhar Manandhar to light the Twariba in order to commence the programme.
The ambiance of the event was filled with an incredible sense of pride as this project is the manifestation of a poignant time in history for Nepal’s culture. The event’s special guests all expressed their gratitude to the entire team for such an innovative move towards the promotion of Nepal’s culture. Mr. Balmukund Prasad Joshi and Board of Trustees (BOT) President Mr. Mahanta Bahadur Shrestha expressed that it is because Shankhadhar started Nepal Samvat that we have this occasion to celebrate, therefore, we must generate as much support as possible for the film.
PPGUK London’s General Secretary, Miss. Tribeni Gurung gave a presentation which aimed to provide a closer look at the meaning of Nepal Samvat in a more modern context. She expressed how those from Newar and non-Newar backgrounds have different notions associated to Nepal Samvat and she gave an insight into the development of Nepal Samvat as well as contrasting it with Vikram Samvat. Miss. Gurung also addressed whether Nepal Samvat is only for Newars.
Mr. Ojesh Singh voiced his gratitude to PPGUK London for giving the opportunity and means to preserve and nurture the traditions of Nepal’s culture. The entire audience was in agreement that this film represents a momentous step forward for Newar culture in the UK. BOT General Secretary, Mr. Shivaji Shrestha, concluded the event by expressing his gratitude towards the film and wished the film every success.
The film’s Writer, Director and Producer, Mr. Sanyukta Shrestha described this project to be a dream come true not only for himself but for the entire community. The film is his interpretation of what people can learn from the story of Shankhadhar Shakwa – a merchant who is believed to have released the people of Nepal from all their debt leading to celebrations and marking the beginning of Nepal Samvat. He also added, this film is a stepping stone towards a new era of Nepalese animation movie. The movie is due to release on 11 December 2016 in the UK and USA and on 17 December 2016 in Nepal.
