117 Nepalis die of COVID-19 throughout the world

LONDON : As many as 117 Nepali nationals living in different parts of the world have died as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection as of Saturday evening.

According to the Non-Resident Nepalese Association (NRNA), 21 Nepali nationals lost their lives in the past one week alone. They include nine in UAE, five in Saudi Arabia, two each in the UK and Nepal and one each in the USA, Qatar and Kuwait.

As per the data collected by the NRN’s Health Committee, the highest number of cases of fatalities due to this global pandemic is in the United Kingdom (UK), where 65 Non-Resident Nepalis have died as a result of the COVID-19 infection so far.

Coordinator of the Health Committee Dr Sanjib Sapkota said a total of 18 Nepalis died in the United Arab Emirates, 16 in the USA, seven in Saudi Arabia, three in Nepal and one each in Qatar, Ireland, Japan, Turkey, Netherlands, Bahrain, Sweden, Kuwait as of Saturday evening. Those breathing their last due to COVID-19 infection include 95 males and 19 females.

Dr Sapkota said the highly affected age group in terms of death is between 50 to 90 years. This accounts for 53 percent.


Similarly, 12,821 Nepalis around the globe have been infected by this virus so far. Of them, 72 percent are those living in various countries in the Middle East, 13 in the North America Region, 10 in Europe, and five others in Asia. Australia accounts for less than 1 percent while no cases of COVID-19 infection have been reported in the African countries yet.

More than 4000 Nepalis have recovered from the infection of this fatal virus so far, according to Dr Sapkota. The trend shows that the spread rate among the Nepalis in the western countries has dropped significantly, while this is actually on rise in the Middle Eastern countries.
